Ha nascut cugula! This is the way the families from Pla d’Urgell (Catalonia) used to announce a daughter’s birth when she had to be, by express wish of the family, the heir. This unexpected daughter was seen as a weed (“cugula” in catalan) which kills the good crops.
Maria Mercè Marçal was born in Pla d’Urgell. Through her work, she tried to fight against these kind of representations of women and she offered other perspectives of feminine identity.
Women lived and still live in a constant search for a place in the society, untying themselves from the hindrance of feminine role prejudices, and looking for new places and new perspectives of reflection and action. But, is this a specific place? Is there only one meaning of the word “woman”? These questions are the key of the dance and theatre play that we want to show you.
A daughter, a mother, a woman in love, an artist; a woman. A woman like a snake that changes its skin, that models itself... Through the voice of one of them: Maria Mercè Marçal. A voice representing Maria, Mercè and the rest of women.
